Temple Beth El's Hebrew School serves children from ages 3-13. Grades 1-6 meet most Sunday morning during the school year from 9:30-noon. Our pre-Hebrew class meets monthly on Sunday mornings from 10:15-11:15. The last half hour of Hebrew School is a prayer service with all of the children, followed by a discussion of a Big Question about Judaism, God or life posed by the children, the teachers, the parents or the rabbi.
We use the Mitkadem individualized Hebrew program developed by the Union for Reform Judaism. Children study Hebrew at their own pace, aided by teen tutors (madrichim), Hebrew School teachers and volunteer parents. We also use the URJ’s Chai program for Judaica, focusing on the three areas of Torah, Avodah (prayer) and Gemilut Chasadim (good deeds).
Each class is led by an experienced adult teacher. Our current staff includes Stacey Mondschein in pre-Hebrew (ages 3-5); Linda Kallin, a graduate of Gratz College, for grades 1-3; Uri Lessing, a public school teacher in Waterville and alumnus of the Olin Sang Ruby URJ camp in Wisconsin, for grades 4-5; and Rabbi Susan for the B’nai Mitzvah class. In addition, we have seven madrichim, graduates of our B’nai Mitzvah program who help out in both tutoring Hebrew and in working with children during projects.
